A Day on Treasure Island
The experience the children had in Treasure Island was one that was honestly not life changing. I failed to see the meaningfulness behind taking children and teaching them about boats and taking them sailing. However, Treasure Island does offer kids the opportunity to set out and sail, which is something that might not have been available to them if not for the program. Treasure island gives children the experience of trying new things beyond their comfort zone, which helps them grow as individuals. I do believe the children had positive experiences while at Treasure Island because they were able to learn in a more hands-on manner. For example, the students tested out what makes a boat buoyant by creating a boat out of aluminum themselves and testing the idea out. This was a great way to teach children because it shows them that there are more ways to learn than rather just by reading and memorizing material. The students were also able to go out and sail, which was something most of them had not done before. By doing this, the kids were learning that sometimes trying new things isn't a bad thing. This opens up the kids and allows them to not be afraid to do things they've never done before. Although call to action day seemed like a bust for us, the kids did get something out of it, even if it wasn't obvious to them.
